Dry Mouth and Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Dry mouth (xerostomia) can worsen both caries and gingivitis.

Management

  • Drink water often in small amounts. Eliminate sugar containing beverages or limit to once daily and with meals.
  • Minimize snacking on simple carbohydrates (such as chips and crackers) and sweets and replace with fresh foods, whole grains, and dairy.
  • Brush twice daily and floss daily.
  • Use fluoride rinse nightly.
  • Use xylitol-containing products such as gum or lozenges after meals.

Gastroesophageal reflux and Hyperemesis gravidarum are both common in pregnancy and can cause enamel erosions.

Management

  • After vomiting, rinse mouth with 1 tsp of baking soda dissolved in 1 cup of water.
  • Avoid brushing too firmly or immediately following vomiting.
  • Small meals with healthy food choices may minimize nausea and vomiting.

Erosions of the lingual sides of the lower incisors due to excessive exposure to gastric acid in a patient with severe GERD. Mandibular tori are also present.
