Dry Mouth and Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Dry mouth (xerostomia) can worsen both caries and gingivitis.

Management

  • Drink water often in small amounts.
  • Brush regularly.
  • Use fluoride rinse.

Gastroesophageal reflux and Hyperemesis gravidarum are both common in pregnancy and can cause enamel erosions.

Management

  • Rinse with water or bicarbonate to reduce acid in mouth immediately after vomiting.
  • Avoid brushing too firmly or immediately following vomiting.

Erosions of the lingual sides of the lower incisors due to excessive exposure to gastric acid in a patient with severe GERD. Mandibular tori are also present.
